This session will review the historical and contemporary contributions of physics to the development of clinical proton beam therapy. It will also introduce the clinical rationale and early experiences with proton therapy for cancer. The session is addressing some of the controversies related to proton therapy including emerging indications, the need for prospective clinical trials, patient and societal costs.
